On Wednesday 1st April 2015, 30 inspirational young people – who are unable to access student finance due to their immigration status – came together to meet expert lawyer Solange Valdez, and to discuss the challenges they are currently facing.
The meeting was opened by a young Let us Learn campaigner who shared her story, including her memories of growing up in the UK and some the barriers she has faced since being brought to the country as a two year old child. She urged everyone to stay strong and believe that they would achieve their dreams.
Afterwards, Solange Valdez delivered a demystifying workshop covering the areas of the immigration system that are preventing young people from accessing university. She explained that some young people under the age of 18 may be able to register as British citizens, whilst those aged over 18 may be able to apply for indefinite lave to remain (ILR), outside of the immigration rules.
There was plenty of time for mingling and for attendees to share experiences and advice, with one young man recommending that those applying for ILR book their ‘life in the UK’ tests as soon as possible, due to a current backlog.
